Our story

Index Exchange was born out of a need for an advertising marketplace that was fair and balanced. We saw the opportunity to create an exchange that empowered media owners to thrive in the digital age, while delivering unparalleled efficiency, transparency, and value across the entire programmatic ecosystem.
From the very beginning, we’ve worked to build exceptional standards that deliver on our vision of total market efficiency. By pioneering header bidding, advancing industry protocols, creating opportunities for addressable campaigns, and eliminating made-for-advertising sites, we’ve been relentless in raising the bar for programmatic excellence.
Today, we’re bringing the same efficiency and scale we established in traditional web media decades ago to newer formats and channels like streaming TV, mobile, native, and more.
As we continue on our mission to accelerate the evolution of ad technology, our focus remains on setting the standard for the industry—from inventory quality to leading levels of transparency and the continued pursuit of a level playing field for all to transact in.
Our history
Founded as Casale Media
Andrew Casale founded Casale Media, an ad network driven to solve problems of scale and efficiency for publishers and support the open web.
Launched Index Platform by Casale Media
Pivoting from the ad network model as programmatic emerged, we introduced Index Platform, enabling real-time transactions between media owners and marketers.
Co-authored OpenRTB specifications
Identifying the need for industry-wide programmatic standards, we helped to co-author the OpenRTB specifications.
Joined the IAB Tech Lab as a founding member
We joined the IAB Tech Lab as a founding member, with Andrew Casale serving on the inaugural Board of Directors.
Evolved into Index Exchange
Casale Media officially rebranded as Index Exchange, and the legacy ad network was shut down.
Pioneered header bidding and launched the Wrapper
We worked to standardize and accelerate adoption of header bidding, launching the Wrapper to improve performance and revenue for our customers.
Launched IX Labs venture arm
As the venture arm of Index, IX Labs aims to accelerate the adoption of technology across the world to solve everyday problems.
Earned “TAG Platinum” status
Building on the quality standards we established early on, we achieved Platinum status with the Trustworthy Accountability Group, becoming one of only eight companies to achieve this status.
Introduced Client Audit Logs
We launched Client Audit Logs (CALs) to provide a receipt for every transaction, further enhancing transparency in programmatic.
Rebuilt our exchange for omnichannel scale
We rebuilt our exchange architecture, debuting a modern omnichannel exchange to harness the scale of new channels like streaming TV, and launched a new brand identity to reflect our full offerings.
Co-authored OpenRTB 2.6 to accelerate standards in streaming TV
We helped develop the OpenRTB 2.6 protocol, creating standardization around a host of new capabilities for streaming TV, including ad podding.
Acquired Rivr, an advanced machine learning company
We made our first-ever business acquisition with Rivr, advancing our use of machine learning to improve programmatic outcomes.
Launched Index Marketplaces in closed beta
Our omnichannel Index Marketplaces platform opened new opportunities for sell-side decisioning, enabling businesses to build atop our platform to scale their solutions for curation, data activation, AI algorithms, carbon measurement, and many others.
Eliminated MFA across Index Exchange
We eliminated made-for-advertising (MFA) sites across our exchange, reinforcing our commitment to transparency and support for publishers.
